- Understanding the practice
What is Acudetox?
Acudetox is gentle acupuncture using only the outer ear, a calm, drug-free way to help the body settle. Here’s what it is, where it comes from, and what a session actually involves.
- The simple version
Acupuncture but only the ear.
Auricular acupuncture (also called auriculotherapy or ear acupuncture) works with points on the outer ear rather than the whole body. At its heart is a single idea: the ear behaves like a microsystem, a small map that reflects the rest of the body.
By placing fine, sterile needles at specific points on that map, a practitioner aims to gently influence how the nervous system responds elsewhere. It’s precise, it’s contained, and you stay fully clothed and seated the whole time.
The diagram is a simplified illustration of that idea, a way to picture how one small area can relate to the whole.

- Where it comes from
A practice with deep roots.
Acudetox isn’t a passing trend, it grew out of decades of clinical use, from a French doctor’s research to hospital addiction wards to clinics worldwide.
1950s · France
The ear is mapped
Dr Paul Nogier observes that points on the ear correspond to areas of the body, laying the groundwork for modern auriculotherapy.
1970s · New York
The NADA protocol
Lincoln Hospital develops a standardised five-point ear treatment to support people through addiction and withdrawal, the birth of “acudetox”.
Today · Worldwide
Everyday calm
The same protocol is now used across clinics, rehabilitation programmes and stress-relief settings around the globe, including here in Krugersdorp.
- Non-invasive · virtually free of side effects · often helpful when other approaches haven't landed

A quick note on how we talk about it
Acudetox is a complementary therapy, something that works alongside your existing care, not a cure or a replacement for medical treatment. We’ll always describe what it may help with, honestly.
- How it may help you settle
Nudging the body from "on alert" to
"at rest".
No one claims to know every mechanism, and honest practitioners say so. The most widely accepted idea is that stimulating these ear points may help the nervous system shift out of fight-or-flight and toward the calmer state where the body recovers. Many people simply describe feeling lighter, sleeping better, or coping more easily.
Calms the stress response
May support a shift toward “rest and digest”, easing the wound-up feeling of a nervous system stuck on high.
Supports better rest
People often report deeper, easier sleep and a quieter mind in the hours and days after a session.
Complements recovery
Used alongside professional care, it can be a steadying part of managing cravings, tension and overwhelm.
Works for groups
Because it’s done seated and needs no diagnosis, it suits corporate wellness mornings and community programmes.
- What to expect
Gentle, contained, and easy to return to.
Non-invasive
Fine, sterile, single-use needles sit just under the skin of the outer ear. Nothing goes deep, and you keep your clothes on.
A small sensation
A quick prick as each point is placed, then usually nothing at all for the rest of the session.
30–40 minutes of rest
The needles stay in while you relax. Many people drift, breathe, and lose track of time.
Very few side effects
Occasional minor tenderness at most. You can drive afterwards and carry on with your day as normal.
Is acudetox safe?
Performed by a trained practitioner with sterile, single-use needles, acudetox is generally very safe. To keep it that way, let Leonie know if you’re pregnant, taking blood thinners, or have a pacemaker, so your session can be tailored to you.
- Common questions
Good things to ask.
Does acudetox hurt?
No pressure, nothing dramatic. Most people are surprised by how simple (and how calming) a session really is.
How many sessions will I need?
It varies from person to person. Acudetox is gentle enough to return to regularly, and many people find a short course of sessions more helpful than a single visit. Leonie will talk through what suits you.
Is it a replacement for my medication or therapy?
No. Acudetox is a complementary therapy that works alongside the care you already have. It’s not a substitute for professional medical advice, medication or treatment.
Can acudetox be brought to my workplace or group?
Yes. Because the protocol is simple and done seated, it works well for corporate wellness sessions and community or rehabilitation groups.
Do I need a diagnosis or referral?
No referral is needed. The NADA protocol uses the same five points for everyone, so it doesn’t depend on a diagnosis, you can simply book a session.
